Articulation, Accents, Hairpins

b. 97-99

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

We consider interpreting the accents in A as long ones to be more probable, as they emphasise the imposition of longer rhythmic values (crotchets) on the triplet figuration. In A and GE1 there are no accents in bar 99, which can be considered as Chopin's inattention (which is characteristic for the reprise). The omission was partially corrected in GE2 (→GE3GE4), where three first accents were placed. EE and FE already have all four signs, concordant with analogous bar 17.

b. 98

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The sources differ in the range of dynamic hairpins. In A the hairpins begin under the 4th quaver and end on the penultimate one. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) they were recreated in the same form. In GE the hairpins were extended on the entire bar, whereas in FE they were shortened by one quaver. In EE the indication was not considered at all. We adopt the version of A (GE2GE3GE4).

b. 99

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The sources differ slightly in the range of dynamic hairpins. In A the hairpins begin under the 3rd quaver and end on the penultimate one. In GE the hairpins were extended on the entire bar. The next editions of GE and EE have shorter hairpins, similar to A, yet moved one quaver to the right. In FE the ending is the same as in A, while the hairpins begin under the 4th quaver.

b. 101

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The sources differ in the range of the crescendo hairpins. The difference is particularly visible in GE as compared to A – in the edition the hairpins were extended to the beginning of the bar. In FE the hairpins begin under the 2nd quaver, whereas in EE – under the 4th one.

The sources differ slightly in the range of the crescendo hairpins whose beginning is placed under the 3rd (A), 2nd (FE) or 4th (FE) quaver. We adopt the notation of A (→GE).
