Issues : Errors of GC

b. 252-257

Pedalling in EE

GC (→GE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The only difference between the pedalling of EE and FE is the presence or absence of the pedal change at the beginning of bar 253. We include both those options in our main text as variants. The pedalling of GC (→GE) may also be authentic (cf. pedal marks in EE in bars 259-265), but the copyist's error is just as plausible, as he may have written here the pedalling for the next line of text (from bars 259-265, in which GC has no pedal marks at all).

b. 259-265

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Pedalling in EE

No markings in GC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE

Our variant suggestion

..

The absence of pedal marks in GC (→GE) is most probably the copyist's error (see also note to bar 266). The pedalling of EE is probably authentic (cf. a similar solution in bars 268-271, confirmed both by EE and by GC). In FE, the placement of the  in bar 259 seems doubtful and we consider it to be an inaccuracy almost certainly resulting from faulty understanding of the hand-written base text , as well as the lack of space around the note D1 (cf. bar 267). In our main text we suggest two, most probably authentic, versions of pedalling (EE and FE modified in bar 259 ) as variants.

b. 264

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Octave in GC (→GE)

Chord in FE (→EE)

..

The comparison with analogous motifs in a few places of Scherzo proves that the missing g2 note on the last crotchet is almost certainly a mistake of the copyist.

b. 266

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Pedalling in EE and FE

No markings in GC (→GE)

..

GC (→GE) has no pedal marks in this bar. This is almost certainly the mistake of the copyist (see also notes to bars 260-265 and 265-266).

Two slurs in GC (→GE)

Interpretation of slurs in GC suggested by the editors

Slur from bar 276 in FE

Complement to slur in FE

Slur from bar 273 in EE

Another interpretation of slurs in GC

..

Beginning the slur of GC (→GE) in bar 275 is most probably a mistake – cf. the slur of FE, beginning one bar later. However, the intention of the writer could have been combining this slur with the slur in bar 273. We include this possibility also due to the slur of EE, which is most probably a result of Chopin's extension of the slur of FE2 in the base text to EE. While the idea of embracing all the discussed bars with one slur does not raise any doubts, the moment of starting the slur could be misinterpreted by the engravers of EE (cf. the note on analogous situations in the middle section of Scherzo). The suggestion of completing the version of FE results from the conviction that the omission of the slur in bar 273 was not intended in this edition. Except for the first of the aforementioned versions, each of the remaining ones can be considered to be corresponding to Chopin's intention on a certain stage of shaping the notation of this phrase.
