Issues : Uncertain notes on ledger lines

b. 34-48

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

..

In bars 34-35 and 48 in A there are characteristic extended stems next to c1 notes in the part of the R.H. written in the treble clef (in the L.H. the effect is noticeable also in the notation of the grace note at the beginning of bar 38). In another context they could have been considered as additional crotchets, which was very frequent in Chopin's works, cf., e.g., the Mazurka in Bminor, Op. 24 No. 4, bar 23.

b. 34

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

g-c1-e1 in As & AI

g-e1 in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

On the 2nd and 3rd beats of the bar the triads of the previous autographs – As and AI – were most probably replaced in A (→FEGE,EE) with sixths (most probably, as the interpretation of A on the available photographs is uncertain). The correctness of the version with sixths is confirmed by the version of the editions in bar 98, marked in A in an abbreviated manner as repetition of bar 34. Admittedly, in bar 162, which is also not written out in A, FE and the majority of the remaining editions include chords, however, it is most probably a mistake.

b. 34

composition: Op. 28 No. 1, Prelude in C major

in A (literal reading→FEEE

No E in A (contextual interpretation→FCGE)

..

The E note in the last bar of the Prelude must be a mistake. It stems from an inaccurate notation of A, in which the intersection point between the stem of the L.H. chord and the 1st ledger line looks like a note. In addition, three bottom ties concerning the passage in b. 33 are written at the pitches of C, E and G, which is a mistake confirmed by the presence of E in b. 34. In the main text we give the version of FC (→GE), undoubtedly intended by Chopin and correctly unravelled by Fontana.

b. 38

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

a-e1 in FE0 (→FE1,FEGGE1)

a-c1-e1 in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

On the 2nd and 3rd crotchet FE and GE1 have empty a-efifths. It is undoubtedly an omission of the engraver of FE – cf. analogous bars 30 and 202 – it could have been caused by the unclear notation of [A]. Chopin probably added the chords in the base text to EE. The corrected version, probably on the basis of a comparison with the mentioned bars, was introduced also in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 41

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Third c1-e1 in A, FE (→EE) & GE2

Only e1 in GE1

..

The engraver of GE did not notice the c1 notes on the 3rd and 5th quavers in A and he placed the  written before the 1st of them before e1. Chopin corrected this mistake in FE (→EE), however, the unnecessary  remained in all editions except for GE2.
