composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

In the main text we add cautionary naturals to g1, a1 in the R.H. and to a, A in the L.H. AsI contains two of them, before a1 and A, while to a was also added by FE1 (→FE2) and EE3. All the aforementioned accidentals are present in GE3. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , Cautionary accidentals , Authentic corrections of FE |

Disruption of the regularity of the sequence of semiquavers in the version of FE is certainly a result of a mistake of the engraver, who instead of the correct notes repeated two previous ones (f1-b1). Chopin corrected it in FED. EE also includes the correct text, which proves the good intuition and courage of the reviser of this edition, since the mistake, no matter how obvious, when seeing the correct text of A (→GE), gives a version that is neither sonically striking nor pianistically inconvenient. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Errors in FE , Annotations in FED , Terzverschreibung error |

It is difficult to say how the replacement of the slurs of A, natural in this context, with one whole-bar slur in GE1 (→FE→EE) occurred. One of the possibilities is Chopin's proofreading, but leaving accents on every second note results in the fact that the effect of the change of slurring is barely aurally perceptible. Therefore, in the main text we adopt the undoubtedly authentic slurs of A. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Authentic corrections of GE |

In the main text we give the long accent written in A as the only undoubtedly authentic sign. The hairpin in GE1, perhaps added by Chopin, can be considered to be a potentially authentic, equal variant. The versions of the remaining editions are most probably a result of inaccuracies – as in the case of FE (→EE) – or revisions (GE2). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Long accents , Inaccuracies in FE , Authentic corrections of GE |
