b. 346-347

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In FE the bottom notes of the last chord in bar 346 and the first one in bar 347 are switched – g1 is in bar 347 and a1 in bar 346. This patent double mistake was corrected in EE.

Slurs in A

Slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slurs in this and in the previous bar in GE1 were probably proofread by Chopin; however, the slur in the R.H. was left without correction here. It was considered a mistake both in FE (→EE) and in GE2, by extending this slur after the remaining ones. We also consider it to be an inadvertence, hence in the main text we give slurs embracing the entire motif in both hands.

b. 346

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In GE1 the semiquaver opening the characteristic main motif of this movement of the Concerto, recalled here, is A-f. This patent mistake, corrected both in FE (→EE) and in GE2, is probably a result of an unfinished proofreading of A, erroneously printed in this place – the correct note was added, yet the erroneous one was not removed.

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

The absence of slurs must be an oversight – Chopin forgot to write slurs after passing to a new page in A. These are the most frequent mistakes committed in the Chopinesque manuscripts. Due to this reason, in the main text we suggest slurs drawn from the part of violin I in Morch, in accordance with the authentic slurring of analogous bars 22-23. The slurs of EE are almost certainly inauthentic, whereas the slur in bar 22 – certainly erroneous.

b. 347

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

In EE and GC there is no bass clef at the end of the bar. Given that both editions are the same, we may suspect Chopin to have made this mistake in [A1]. Since the chords of RH in b. 348 are notated on two staves, lack of the clef does not pose any problems for text interpretation (in EE b. 348 is printed as the new line of the text with the right clef at the beginning, which minimises the consequences of this omission). The clef was supplemented in GE
