b. 223

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

a-c1-d1 in A

a-d1 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The absence of c1 in FE (→GE,EE) resulted, according to us, from a misinterpretation of A, in which this crotchet actually seems to include only 2 notes. However, the unnatural protrusion on the ledger line in A almost certainly proves that the note is there – cf., e.g. the thickness of the ledger lines in the chord on the 2nd crotchet in this bar. Moreover, although this place occurs only once, a similar D7 chord with an identical resolution is to be found a number of times (b. 217, 219 and analog.), always as an a-c1-dchord.

[], our alternative suggestion

No markings in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we give the A version (→GE), supplemented after authentic pedal markings in similar situations, e.g. in bar 229. The FE version can be considered an equal variant. We also suggest an alternative interpretation of the imprecise A notation.

No time signature in FE

 in EE

..

Chopin added the  time signature marking to A after the basis for FE had been finished, which explains its absence in that edition. EE corrected the mistake by adding a , which was present in bar 1, which could be justified to a certain extent, as the Chopinesque Tempo primo indication may be misleading, since it seems to direct us to the beginning of the piece.

In FE1 the bottom minim at the beginning of the bar is an A1. The mistake was corrected in FE2 (→EE).

When interpreted literally, the Tempo primo indication directs us to the beginning of the piece, which, of course, could not have been intended by Chopin. Therefore, formally speaking, come prima would be more appropriate, which means, among others, 'as before'. We keep the source indication, as the texture clearly indicates that it should be the tempo of the main section of the Fantasy that should be continued.
