Different chords in GE3

..

The original version of last two chords, conveyed by FE0 (→FEGGE1GE2), was completed by Chopin with a2 notes in the proofreading of FE1 and in the base text to EE. In turn, in GE3 another addition was introduced, most probably modelled on the progression of chords in the previous bar. However, there are no reasons for possible recognition of this version as authentic.

b. 260-261

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No slur in A (→GE)

Slur to end of bar in FE (→EE)

Slur to bar 261 suggested by the editors

..

The very fact of a slur having been added in the proofreading of FE (→EE) by Chopin does not raise doubts, yet its range seems to have been reproduced inaccurately. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur led to the beginning of bar 261, after the slur written with Chopin's hand in an analogous motif two bars earlier.

e3 on 2nd beat in A (→GEFEEE), contextual interpretation

Our alternative suggestion

..

Comparison of the piano part in A (→GEFEEE) with the orchestral part of Morch gives rise to the suspicion that there is a mistake, due to a non-simultaneous introduction of an altered fifth of the G major chord (written by Chopin as e):
.

It appears at the beginning of the bar in the 2nd violin part and on the 2nd beat of the bar in the R.H. with unchanged d2 and d1 in the L.H. ReF shows that the mistake was committed in Morch – the 2nd violin should have f1 instead of e1.
The notation of the trill on eshall be also completed, since the necessary accidental specifying the top note of the trill is missing over it.

An alternative version suggested by us allows to achieve an even smoother harmonic sound, at the expense of a small modification of rhythm and pedalling.

b. 260

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slur in A (→GE)

Slur in FE (→EE)

..

In the case of the slur appearing in FE (→EE), neither Chopin's authorship nor its meaning are certain – separating the ending of the trill from the next phrase is entirely clear thanks to a new slur in bar 261, not to mention smorzandorallentando and the fermata. Due to this reason, we do not give it in the main text.
