b. 180

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No slur in A (→GEFE,EE1EE2)

Slur in EE3

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we propose adding a slur covering a pair of double stops at the transition of bars 180-181, b-a1 and e1-g1. The slur was also added in EE3.

According to the editors, the  sign in A (→GE1GE2) is entered imprecisely because it includes a rest during which a crescendo cannot be started. In the main text, we give it a scope analogous to the next such sign. A similar interpretation is used in FE and EE, as well as in FESB, in which, however, the sign is reversed (diminuendo instead of crescendo). It's hard to say whether this was an intentional change or a mistake. On the contrary, in GE3 the sign was slightly extended, which was probably a revision.

It is difficult to say whether the change in the direction of the dynamic hairpin under the second two-note motif was introduced intentionally by Chopin or the reviser of GE1, or whether it is the result of an engraver's mistake. The lack of visible traces of changes in the print rather indicates an adjustment or – what the editors believe is most likely – an error. The engraver could have made the quite common "mirror" error by simply inverting the sign (cf. e.g. Nocturne in D Op. 27 No. 2, b. 6), or perceived this and the previous sign to be a pair  , very common in music in general, and in these Variations in particular. Therefore, we leave in the main text the only undoubtedly authentic version of A.

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

No marking in FE (→EE1)

mid-bar in EE2

As in the case of the entire group of dynamic indications in bars 164-179,  was almost certainly added by Chopin to A (→GE) after [FC] had been finished. The composer placed it in the middle of the bar, which, according to us, is a particularly clear example of placing markings within and not at the beginning of their scope. Chopin would sometimes follow the former rule, although back then it was already the latter that was generally observed. Due to this, in the main text we move this  to the beginning of the motif.
This indication was also added by EE2, on the basis of GE1; however, it was placed earlier, before the 2nd triplet.

b. 180-181

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

c1(2) in A (→GE)

c1(2) in FE1

c1(2) in FE2 (→EE)

The FE1 version featuring c1 and c2 is probably authentic – it was introduced at the stage of proofreading (it can be seen that the  to the last quaver in bar 180 was added in print), which rules out a mistake when copying or engraving. According to us, it is possible that we are dealing with an error committed while proofreading, resulting from the similarity between the ending of bar 180 and 181 and the ending of bar 184 and 185, which in FE are – as in our transcriptions – on adjacent lines, one above the other (the similarity is all the grater as in A (→[FC]FE1) there is no  lowering g1 to g1 in bar 185). Anyways, in FE2 the flats added by FE1 were changed to naturals, hence either returning to the original A version or correcting the previous mistake.
