In the 1st half of the bar Chopin wrote in A two versions of the harmonic legato, overlapping – holding B as a crotchet and f as a double-dotted crotchet (as at the beginning of the next bar) and holding B as a minim (as in the remaining adjacent figures). These versions were probably entered at a different time with the intention of one replacing the other, which Chopin eventually forgot to do. To the main text we adopt the second version, which more naturally combines with the authentic half-bar pedal; we suggest the first one – after removing the erroneous 2nd dot prolonging the f crotchet – as an alternative solution. The version as in our main text is also to be found in the first editions.

As was the case 4 bars earlier, the shorter top slur in GE (→IE) is probably a revision, while the omission thereof – mistakes by FE and EE. On the other hand, such a double oversight in unrelated sources seems highly unlikely. Therefore, it is possible that the slur was added to GE1 after the remaining editions had been prepared (see bar 225), while its presence in IE resulted from an independent revision, introduced by analogy with bars 164-165.

The omission of the d2-e2 slur in bars 169-170 in all editions is almost certainly an oversight – in A the slur is poorly visible.

In A the naturals to the 2nd and 4th L.H. quavers in bar 168 and to the last quaver in bar 169 are missing – e, a1, B. The accidentals were added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).
