b. 171

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Staccato dot in A & GE2

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The staccato dot over the last chord in GE1 (→FEEE) was probably overlooked. However, in the proofreading of FE Chopin changed the concept of phrasing and articulation of the 2nd half of the bar, by embracing the chord with a slur and at the same time authorising the missing staccato. In the main text we adopt the changed version. GE2 returned the dot after A.

New slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

Slur continued in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The slur embracing c3 and ain bar 171 in A begins still in bar 170, and in GE1 (→FEEE) it was interpreted as running from the last crotchet in this bar (e3). According to us, it is not right, which is indicated by the slurs beginning from the cminims in bars 173 and 175. An argument for the start of the slur from the minim could be also the slur in the L.H., of the same range, as long as it was added by Chopin.

2 slurs in A

Slur over triplet in GE1 (→FEEE)

1 slur in GE2

..

In the main text we reproduce precisely the notation of A, since there is no visible attempt to combine the slur started over the dsemiquaver – added probably later – with the slur over the triplet. The absence of the first slur in GE1 (→FEEE) is probably an inaccuracy – the engraver could have not been certain how to reproduce this slur. GE2 repeated here the slur that is present in GE (→FE) in bars 169-170.
