Issues : Wedges
b. 39
|
composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I
..
[A] most probably included wedges, as Gutmann considered them to be staccato dots on a number of occasions (cf., e.g., the Etude in F major, Op. 25 No. 3, bars 49-52). Chopin wedges were actually often misinterpreted as dots also by the engravers, in turn, misinterpretation of dots as wedges was almost inexistent. Therefore, in the main text we give wedges, added in FE2 (→EE,FE3→FE4) most probably on the basis of [A]. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , FE revisions , Wedges , Inaccuracies in GC |

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major
..
In A the staccato mark under the 1st quaver is in the form of a wedge, and this is how we give it in the main text. In FC (→GE) Fontana must have assumed that the top part of the mark was an unintentional trace of a pen, which cannot be ruled out completely, although such defects in the notation of dots are very rare in Chopin's autographs – cf., e.g. dots in the Prelude in G category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Errors in EE , Wedges |

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major
..
In the main text we give a wedge in the R.H. written in both autographs. Its absence in the editions is almost certainly a result of an oversight. The wedges at the beginning of bars 44 and 46, marked in A in the parts of both hands, suggest the need to add the sign in the L.H. also in bar 42. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Wedges |

b. 44

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major
..
In the main text we give the wedge written in A, most probably overlooked in FE (→GE). In EE a dot was added in this place. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in FE , Wedges |

b. 45-46
|
composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete
..
In the main text we keep the staccato dots clearly written down in both bars in A. The wedges of GE (→FE,EE) probably resulted from the engraver's carelessness or from his conviction that the marks could be regarded as equivalent. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Wedges |
