FE1 - First French Edition

Publisher: M. Schlesinger
Date: VII 1836
Plate number: M.S. 1935
Title: Deux Nocturnes pour le Piano. Nocturne I
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Appony

Based on GE1FE1 was printed with the use of original plates for several dozen years without any changes to the musical text (after 1845 by M. Schlesinger's successor, G. Brandus). Chopin's corrections of FE1 included adding pedal marks in bars 74-75 and 99-100 and the introduction of changes in some places (e.g. bars 1468 and 100) which most probably corrected the errors of GE.

The accent mark used in FE1 is narrow and quite long (its length depending in many places on the exactness of its impression on paper), which makes it resemble a long accent. In determining this, we follow the assumption that wherever the base text (GE1) had a short accent, FE1 also has the same accent type; this is also how the issue was dealt with in EE. However, one should remember that this does not necessarily have to tally with the notation of the autograph - see the characteristics of GE1.
