FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: X 1837
Title: Etudes || 10me Étude
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

It was a lost manuscript that was the base text for FE1, probably an autograph, corrected and completed by Chopin.

FE1 was certainly corrected by Chopin, which is proved by visible traces of this kind of corrections, which could have been ordered only by the composer, e.g., in this Etude change of  to  in bar 5, separation of the bottom (middle) voice in the R.H. in bars 58-60 and 78-80 and addition of f2 minims in bar 107. Chopin's intervention can be also assumed in the case of other elements appearing exclusively in this edition, as, e.g., the pedalling of the middle section, the d2 grace note in bar 47, dim. - - indications in bars 47-49, 67-69 and 87-89 or some of the accidentals (e.g., naturals in bar 113).

FE1 lacks numerous necessary accidentals, which almost certainly corresponds to the notation of the base text. For example, in bars 6, 14 and 108 there are no sharps before the f crotchets, in bar 11 there are no naturals before the B-b octave, in bar 13 there are no sharps raising g2-g3 to g2-g3 and in bar 26 there are no naturals returning e and e2.

In a few places FE1 contains original versions, changed by Chopin in the remaining sources, e.g.,  signs instead of accents in bars 3-4 or 21 or F-f and f1-f2 instead of G-g and g1-g2 in bar 106.

FE1 contains a number of patent errors – b instead of a in the chord in bar 82, lack of f in bar 83, a1 instead of f1 in bar 108. Lack of the fingering numeral in bar 31 or mordent in bar 71 is probably also an oversight of the engraver.
