b. 9-16

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Pedalling in GE

No markings in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we include the pedalling of GE, added probably in [A] after [FC] had already been finished. It includes both outer sections of the Polonaise, b. 8-124 and 266-326. The fact that these markings are almost completely absent in FE (→EE) – they are only in b. 33-34 – can be explained as follows: Chopin planned to add them while proofreading FE1, yet he eventually gave up on the idea or forgot it.

b. 9-15

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE2 the L.H. beaming was changed in these bars by separating the quaver from the following two semiquavers wherever such a combination appears. We do not include those changes in our transcriptions, since they must be arbitrary and are generally of purely graphical nature. Likewise in the entire Polonaise.

b. 10-12

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

in GE

 in FE (→EE)

Both versions of notation of the trill at the beginning of b. 10 and 12 most probably bear the same meaning – a trill filling a full rhythmic value. In the main text we give the more suggestive version of our principal source – FE.

b. 10

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

over g1 in GE, EE & FES

 under e1 in FE

..

The  mark having been placed in FE almost certainly resulted from the routine approach of the engraver of FE, who moved the mark from above the beam to the side of noteheads – such a placement of marks is generally preferred with only one melodic line on the stave (the first trill in this bar is placed in the same manner, which, however, does not influence its meaning). In the discussed place, this version of notation, suggesting that  refers to e1, must be contrary to Chopin's intention, which is evidenced by the musical sense, confirmed by the version of notation of GE, based on [A]. In FES the mark was crossed out and written over g1; the right text is also in EE.

We add cautionary naturals before e1 and d1 in the main text. The accidentals were also added in EE.
