CGS - Copy by George Sand
Date: | (VIII 1839-1854) |
Title: | [Prélude] |
Dedication: | None |
Copy made by George Sand (photocopy in: Korespondencja Chopina z George Sand i jej dziećmi, ed. K. Kobylańska, Warsaw 1981), the fifth of six Preludes copied by the novelist in an extensive album containing pieces by various composers, written by different persons. CGS was almost certainly prepared on the basis of FE2, which is supported by the following arguments:
- compliant division of the text into lines;
- compliance between certain graphical features, e.g. starting from the middle of b. 7-8 the six consecutive marks were placed in FE over the bottom stave, leaving the corresponding marks under the notes. This characteristic and peculiar manner of notation is to be observed in CGS only.
- Almost full compliance between the sources in terms of text – the differences may be easily explained by inaccuracies (e.g. overlooked L.H. slurs in b. 1-9) or by copying mistakes, e.g. c instead of B as the penultimate quaver in b. 4). In particular, in both sources an inauthentic notation of dotted rhythms in the top R.H. voice was used, according to which each semiquaver is shifted with respect to the corresponding quaver belonging to the bottom voice triplet, although the notation of A indicates that they should be performed simultaneously.
Dating – see the Prelude in A minor no. 2.
