Title: | 24 Préludes |
Dedication: | Son ami J. C. Kessler |
Autograph fair-copy of all 24 Preludes, sent from Majorca on January 22, 1839 to Julian Fontana for copying. A served as the basis for the first French edition. Many deletions and corrections together with a considerable number of various errors and inaccuracies represent the work devoted by Chopin to A but also the effort the completion of such a large manuscript demanded from the ailing composer. A more detailed description of A as a whole – see Prelude in C no. 1.
In the Prelude in E, it is the following corrections that attract attention:
- the mark having been crossed out, initially entered to mark the time signature;
- the fragment of the R.H. part written down on the bottom stave, above the bass line, having been crossed out at the beginning of b. 1 and probably also b. 4;
- changes to the rhythm of the top voice of the R.H. part in b. 9-12.
The inaccuracies of A mainly include overlooked accidentals in such situations as the 1st half of b. 6, in which the bottom notes of the R.H. triplets are devoid of the necessary accidentals.
