Autograph presented to Alfred de Beauchesne, dated “Paris, 30 January 1840”. It contains a first version of the work which does not have bars 9-12. Under Chopin's entry there is a paraphrase of this Prelude (in C major) written 11 years later by Ferdinand Hiller. Tthe first four bars use the soprano melody from bars 1-4 of the Prelude, and the next four – the bass progression from bars 5-8.
