First French edition of the whole Op. 28, based on A. Chopin did not participate in its preparation – proofreading of FE1, which included i.a. supplemented accidentals and pedalling, was conducted by Julian Fontana. For a general description of FE1 in the entire Op. 28 – see Prelude in C no. 1.
In the Prelude in D, the majority of the defects of FE1 are related to the difficulties in the interpretation of the notation of A, which is ambiguous in numerous places due to dense notation and deletions/corrections. In addition to the inaccuracies concerning the pedalling and the dynamics, some major errors include overlooked additional crotchet stems in the R.H. in b. 13-16 and 29-32 and the quaver voice in b. 36 not having been separated.
