FE2 - Corrected impression of FE1

Publisher: Adolphe Catelin et Cie
Date: (VIII⇒) 1839
Plate number: Ad. C. (560) et Cie
Title: 24 Préludes
Dedication: Son ami Camille Pleyel

FE2 was printed not long after FE1. It contains some alterations, mostly corrections of the errors of FE1. Most probably they were also made by J. Fontana, although it is not possible to entirely exclude the participation of Chopin, indirect as it may have been. The proofreading might have consisted of two stages, which seems to be evidenced by the traces of corrections in the Prelude in F minor no. 8, b. 22. Other corrections include:

  • accidentals added, e.g. in the Preludes in G no. 3, b. 9F minor no. 8, b. 4, 13, G minor no. 12, b. 535, B minor no. 16, b. 22, 26;
  • erroneous  raising f1 to f1 removed in the Prelude in F minor no. 8, b. 8;
  • correct pitches restored, e.g. in the Preludes in C minor no. 10, b. 2 (b1, a1 chenged to a1, g1), F no. 13, b. 22 (octave A-a changed to G-g);
  •  added in the Prelude in A minor no. 2, b. 11;
  • a tie to d added in the Preludes in G minor no. 12, b. 64-65;
  • pedalling added in b. 33-35 of the Prelude in F no. 13 and in b. 31 of the Prelude in B minor no. 16;
  •  added in b. 84 of the Prelude in D no. 15.

Not all errors of FE1 were corrected, e.g. in b. 4 of the Prelude in E minor no. 14.

Among the changes that are not corrections of patent mistakes, the most important ones are the added pedalling markings in the Preludes in A no. 17, b. 37-42 and in E no. 19, b. 9-12, as well as the correction of the markings in the Prelude in E minor no. 4, b. 18.

In the Prelude in C, the caption title was changed with the mistake in the initial of Chopin's name corrected.

FE3. In December 1846 another impression of FE2 was released, performed already by the new owner of the rights to the Preludes, the Brandus et Cie company. The change is signalized by a new publishing number – B et Cie 4594 – on the pages containing notes (on the title page, data of the first publisher, Catelin, remained). In addition, the price was raised (by 20%); however, no changes to the score were introduced. FE3 was reprinted many times later on, with various changes on the cover, but not in the score – the copy of FED presented in mUltimate Chopin may serve as an example.
