b. 61-62

composition: WN 37, Lento con gran espressione

e1 in bars 61-62 in A1, CK (→CB) & EL

e1 & e1 in CJ, literal reading

e1 & e1 in CJ, contextual interpretation

..

Out of the two versions coming from [A2], we give priority to CK due to its compliance with the unequivocally authentic version of A1. The sharp raising e1 to e1 in b. 61 in CJ could have been placed by mistake, e.g. due to the resemblance of the figures in b. 61-63. On the other hand, one cannot rule out that Chopin wanted to introduce a major variant of the tonic already in b. 61 – cf. the major endings of the Nocturnes in E Minor, WN 23, C Minor, Op. 27 No. 1, F Minor, Op. 48 No. 2 or F Minor, Op. 55 No. 2, consisting of a few or several dozen bars.

The dynamic and agogic indications of the final four-bar section clearly differ in the particular sources. However, only two basic versions are authentic – A1 and CJ and CK (the differences between both copies based on [A2] concern insignificant details only). The close resemblance of the version of CB to the one of EL is puzzling – according to us, however, the coincidence does not point to a common source, which is contradicted by other numerous differences between these sources, but to a similar way of thinking of Balakirev and the reviser of EL, who strived for simplified notation.

b. 62

composition: WN 37, Lento con gran espressione

In A1 the L.H. part is marked in an abridged manner – with the / mark – as a repetition of the preceding bar.

No slurs in A1, CK & EL

Slurs in CJ

Slurs in CB

..

The missing slurs in CK may be explained by the copyist's distraction at the end of the work – he also overlooked the  mark. The longer slurs of both hands were added by Balakirev, just like the vast majority of the remaining slurs of CB.
