b. 361-364

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur to bar 364 in A (→FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

Slur to end of bar 360 in FC (→GE1)

..

The missing ending of the slur in a new line must be a mistake of the copyist. The error was corrected in GE2 (→GE3), most probably on the basis of analogy with b. 463-466.

b. 365

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In all editions except for GE2 the whole-bar rest was specified with the digit 1, one (FE and GE3) or two (GE1 and EE).

b. 369-370

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Separate slurs in A (contextual interpretation→FC)

Continuous slur in A (possible interpretation→FEEE) & GE

..

In A the slur at the end of b. 369 clearly suggests continuation, which is not confirmed by the slur in b. 370, at the beginning of a new page. The notation of FC can also be regarded as misleading in that respect. A comparison with three analogous places, b. 268-269, 288-289 & 390-391, evidently supports inaccuracy of the slur in b. 369, pulled too far. Therefore, in the main text we give separated slurs, yet the version of the editions with a continuous slur may be considered an acceptable variant in this case.

b. 372-373

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Tie to f1 in A (→FC), GE2 (→GE3) & FESf

No tie in FE (→EE)

Slur c1-e1 in GE1

..

The missing tie of f1 is a patent mistake, although in FE it was overlooked, while in GE1 – distorted, since it was interpreted as a slur combining the crotchets of the middle voice, c1 and e1. The correct version was introduced in subsequent GE; the tie was also added in FESf.

b. 374

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No fingering in sources

[1] suggested by the editors

..

The fact that there is no indication that f should be taken over by the L.H. is to be considered an inaccuracy of notation. Chopin could have considered the indication in very similar b. 293 to be clear enough, yet it is also possible that he simply overlooked that place while adding ones in b. 293 and 395.
