b. 241-245

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No indication in A

cresc. - - - in FCFE (→EE) & GE2 (→GE3)

cresc.in GE1

..

Chopin added five-bar crescendi both in FC (→GE; in GE1 without dashes) and the proofreading of FE (→EE), which we take into account in the main text. It is noteworthy that the additions are fully compatible unlike for the first time (b. 109-116), when they differed in the range of the indication. See also b. 246-249.

b. 246-249

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A

 &  in FC

in GE1

in bar 246 in FE (→EE)

 & - - -  in GE2 (→GE3)

 & - - - , our alternative suggestion

..

Chopin added  in b. 246 in the proofreading of FE, thus confirming such a position of the indication: see the note to analogous b. 114-117. On the other hand, the marks written by Chopin in FC are also consistent, and in the case of  in b. 249, visibly supported by a critical look at the final result of additions: Chopin crossed out the previously written  there. In the main text we give the indications of FC, which are a part of a numerous set of indications encompassing the entire theme, which ends here. As an alternative solution we also suggest, next to the version of FE, adding dashes leading cresc. to  in b. 249 in FC, as written by Chopin in analogous b. 109-116. The missing  indication may be a mistake of GE1, whereas the version of GE2 (→GE3) was entirely repeated after FC in b. 114-117 (cf. b. 235-238).

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE) and GE3

Shorter slur in GE2

..

The shorter slur in GE2 is most probably a mistake by the engraver. It was corrected in GE3.

One-bar pedalling in FC (→GE)

Two-bar pedalling, our alternative suggestion

..

In the main text we give the pedalling entered by Chopin into FC (→GE). We provide justification for the suggested alternative version in the note to analogous b. 115-116.

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Staccato dots in A (→FCGE)

No marks in FE (→EE)

..

The missing dots at the beginning of the bar (in both hands) is almost certainly an oversight of the engraver of FE (→EE).
