The arbitrary version of GE3 is almost certainly erroneous – such an anticipation of a chord that is to be played shortly with notes of the figuration is typical of Chopin, cf. e.g. bar 279 of this movement of the Concerto, the Etude in C Major, Op. 10 No. 1, bar 5, the Etude in A Minor, Op. 25 No. 11, bars 8 and 10 or the Ballade in G Minor, Op. 23, bar 63. The a1 note, present in harmonically similar bar 492, does not constitute an argument for a possible wrong insertion of a in the discussed bar, since the melodic context of the preceding figuration is different there. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

A later start of the slur in GE3, although seemingly justified, is probably contrary to Chopin's final intention. The traces visible in FE prove that the four-bar slur starting from the 1st quaver resulted from proofreading – originally, these bars were provided with shorter slurs, out of which the first one, encompassing bar 496 only, most probably started after the 1st quaver. The mark under the 2nd triplet is a long accent or a short diminuendo, and both interpretations can be considered justified. However, having analysed all three analogous bars (bars 504-505 and 508), in the main text we adopt a short accent after bar 504. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Long accents , GE revisions |
