b. 402-403

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

No marks in FE (→GE,EE)

Staccato dots suggested by the editors

Four tritones in the L.H. are devoid of articulation markings in the sources. According to us, it is a result of the layout, in which those quavers are placed on the top stave under the semiquavers in the R.H. – even if Chopin managed to squeeze them between both parts in [A], the engraver could have considered it impossible to reproduce such a notation in print. In subsequent bars, respective dyads are already provided with staccato dots; therefore, in the main text we mark these four quavers in the same way.

b. 404-405

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

4 staccato dots in FE (→GE1GE2)

6 dots in EE

4 dots in bars 404-405 in GE3

..

Although not all uneven quavers in FE (→GE1GE2) are provided with staccato dots (the marks are absent in the 1st half of bar 404 and in the 2nd half of bar 405), there is no doubt that the defects are to be attributed to Chopin's or the engraver's inaccuracies. EE added dots, while GE3 removed the dot in bar 404 and added one in bar 405.

b. 404-406

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

No marks in FE (→GE,EE)

The absence of staccato dots under the f quavers certainly does not mean that their articulation changes with respect to the previous two bars. Either Chopin considered the previous four dots to be enough, considering the homogenous texture, or he or the engraver forgot about those markings. Yet another possibility is discussed in the adjacent note. In order to avoid doubts, we add dots in the main text.

b. 407

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

No marks in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

2 staccato dots in GE3

4 dots suggested by the editors

In the main text, we add staccato markings both next to the top quavers and next to both f, considering their absence to be an oversight of Chopin, the engraver or both. We consider the version completed like in GE3 to be possibly intended by Chopin.

b. 412

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

Staccato dots in FE (→EE)

No marks in GE

..

The missing dots in GE are most probably an oversight, although it cannot be ruled out that the markings were added in the last proofreading of FE – cf. bar 430.
