Placing the mark only just under the 2nd quaver must be a result of misunderstanding of the notation of the handwritten base text – due to the lack of space, Chopin would often put pedalling marks next to low-located notes. category imprint: Interpretations within context issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Errors repeated in GE , Errors repeated in EE |

In FE, all marks are placed before the bass note, to which they undoubtedly apply. As a result of this, in numerous places, these marks fall under the last semiquavers of the previous bars. This inaccurate notation, resulting from lack of space, could have been present already in the autograph, since we repeatedly encounter examples of such notations in Chopin's autographs. The notation was repeated in the vast majority of the bars in GE1 (→GE2) and EE. The standard notation was introduced in GE3. category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: Inaccuracies in FE , GE revisions |

In this context, the absence of pedalling markings undoubtedly indicates the use of the indications given in analogous figures in the previous bars, which is confirmed by the markings written by Chopin in the recapitulation (bars 542-547). category imprint: Editorial revisions |

The mark in bar 205, which is not followed by a mark in the majority of the sources, may be interpreted as a general col or simile indication (cf. e.g. the Etude in E major, op. 10, no. 11, bars 3-4). However, according to us, an inaccuracy, caused by a combination of oversights of both Chopin and the engraver of FE (e.g. the mark in bar 205 would have fallen in FE at the end of the line, which favours inaccuracies), is more likely in this case. The additions suggested in the main text are modelled after the authentic indications in bars 203-204. A similar addition was introduced into GE3. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: GE revisions , No pedal release mark |
