Slurs

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Addition of staccato dots and shift of the beginning of the slur are arbitrary changes of GE3. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

The ending of the slur is unclear in the majority of the editions – the slur does not go beyond d1, yet the last semiquaver, f, placed on the bottom stave, is actually under that note, so that one can assume that it is also encompassed with the slur. Such an interpretation was written in an unequivocal manner in GE3. In fact, both notations define the same performance, since d1, being a quaver, cannot be separated from the next semiquaver. In this situation, it seems to be most natural to lead the slur to the end of the passage; this is the version we adopt to the main text. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , GE revisions |

b. 436
|
composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I
..
In the main text, we begin the slur from the 1st semiquaver, in accordance with the slurs FE contains in the majority of analogous bars. Staccato dots are an arbitrary addition of a revision of GE3. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: GE revisions |

b. 436-437

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

We consider the missing slur in FE to be an oversight (of the engraver or Chopin). The slur suggested in the main text is modelled after authentic slurs in analogous bars 412-414. The range of the slur added in EE is unclear – when interpreted literally, it encompasses the last 9 semiquavers in bar 436; however, its shape and placement suggest that it was supposed to have the same range as the one given by us. The version of GE3 is arbitrary. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , GE revisions |

b. 437

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

The staccato dots were arbitrarily added by the reviser of GE3, whereas the slur was repeated after the previous bar. In the main text, we keep the slur of FE (→EE,GE1→GE2), which we consider to be correct. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |
