c4 repeated in FE

c4 tied in GE, EE, FED & FEH

..

The absence of the tie of c4 must be a mistake (probably of the engraver of FE, although Chopin's oversight also cannot be excluded), which is proved by:

  • a tie in analogous bar 175;
  • ties of g3 and e3 in the next two motifs, being a slightly modified repetition of the first one;
  • ties added in two pupil's copies bearing clear traces of this movement of the Concerto having been developed during lessons with Chopin.

The tie was added both in GE and EE.

e-g in FE (→GE,EE)

g-e suggested by the editors

..

In the source version, we encounter evident, awkward in this context, parallel e-e1 and g-g1 octaves. A comparison with analogous bar 178 suggests – in the absence of arguments for differentiating these bars – a possibility of an erroneous swap of notes by the engraver of FE. Such mistakes can be found in first editions of Chopin's pieces, e.g. in the Prelude in B Minor, Op. 28 No. 16, bar 2 (in GE). Moreover, it cannot be excluded that it is the original version of that place, corrected in bar 178 and inadvertently left here. This possibility is indicated by the melodic shape of this bar, analogous to the previous figure – using a recent scheme in an accompanying figure is a natural starting point in the composing process.

No slur in FE (→GE1GE2)

New slur in EE

Extension of slur to end of bar 541 in GE3

Extension of slur to bar 542 suggested by the editors

..

The missing slur must be inadvertence. In EE, the slurring was completed in the simplest manner by adding a slur over the part of the phrase without it. In the main text, we suggest an adequate extension of the slur from the previous bar, in accordance with the slurs in all 5 analogous places. A similar revision was introduced in GE3; however, the slur was led only to the last semiquaver in bar 541.

No slur in FE

f1-g1 slur in GE

d1-e1 slur in EE

..

The missing slur of FE is a patent oversight. The slur was added both in GE and EE; however, in GE it combines the upper notes of the third, like in analogous bars, whereas in EE – the bottom ones (there was no space for a slur between the upper ones).
