raising f2 to sharp2 in GE2 |
We supplement the raising f2 to fis2. The sharp was probably omitted by Chopin due to oversight, as:
- the key in force is A major; in such a situation omitting some of the accidentals necessary for the correct notation is a rule in Chopin's manuscripts (cf. e.g. Impromptu in A flat Op. 29, bar 48; in the Prelude in A flat Op. 28 no. 17, in bar 19 none of the sources connected with the publication has sharpening f1 to f sharp1, yet the accidental written into a copy of an earlier redaction of that work testifies to the composer's mistake).
- the role of this 3.5-bar long fragment in A major is to prepare the listener for the c sharp minor in bar 38; the use of the lowered 6th grade of the scale could disturb - somewhat prematurely - the harmonic colour.
