b. 156-157

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

& long accent in FE (→GE)

& short accent in EE

2 long accents – our alternative suggestion

..

The differing dynamic markings appearing in identical motifs – in bar 156 and a long accent in bar 157 – suggest that the notation is inaccurate. It is supported by a comparison with analogous or identical bars 152-153 and 164-165, which contain accents. However, taking into account frequent misunderstandings in the reproduction of long accents, we consider it to be likely that it was long accents that Chopin meant in both bars.

b. 159

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

Hairpin in FE (→GE,EE), literary reading

Long accent in FE (→GE,EE), contextual interpretation

..

A hairpin in all sources is a possible inaccuracy of the engraver – in similar bar 167, the length of the mark clearly points to a long accent.

Accents suggested by the editors

..

The absence of accents – cf. analogous bars 152-153 – certainly does not mean that the figurations in these bars are supposed to be less brilliant, while the shape of the motifs – less vivid. Therefore, according to us, it is an inaccuracy of notation, which we remove in the main text.

b. 163-164

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

Slur up to bar 164 in FE (→GE

No slur in EE1

Slur only in bar 163 in EE3

..

Leading the L.H. slur until the beginning of bar 164 is much less justified than in the case of the R.H. slur due to the over two-octave f1-E leap. Therefore, it is quite likely that it is the slur added in EE3 that corresponds to Chopin's intention – the engraver of FE could have been under the influence of the R.H. slur while interpreting the slur of [A], perhaps written with a flourish.

We add a cautionary  next to d2. The accidental was added also in GE.
