composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

The demisemiquaver passage in FE (→GE1) is devoid of the accidentals present before the 1st chord (not counting the octave sign) – the naturals of a1 and a2 and the  of f2. A comparison with the notation of the two previous bars, in which the  of e2 is present in the passage, shows that possible rules of validity of accidentals were approached in a very flexible manner in such situations. In the remaining editions the notation was partially completed – EE added a  of f2, while GE2 (→GE3) a  of a2. See also b. 156.

It is difficult to assume that Chopin could have imagined a different articulation for this pair of the L.H. octaves. It was already obvious to the revisers of both GE and EE.

The only cautionary accidental in FE (→GE1GE2) is the  before a3. EE added a  before a2 in the L.H., while GE3 naturals before c2 and c4. In the main text we include all these accidentals.

The  mark having been placed at the end of the bar in GE is an arbitrary and undoubtedly erroneous revision. In this edition, the pedalling markings were similarly erroneously reproduced also in b. 170, 171 and 172.
