b. 264

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

The notation of the last two quavers is inaccurate in the sources, since Chopin most probably considered the manner in which he wrote the chord on the 4th quaver of the bar – c1-f1-a1-e2-a2 – to be sufficient in order to mark the return to the main key of E major. Consequently, there is no accidental before the chord on the 5th quaver in FE (→EE,GE1GE2), while the last quaver is lacking in the  restoring B. On the other hand, all sources contain cautionary naturals before d2-d3 in the last R.H. chord, unnecessary if we assume that the preceding chord was interpreted correctly. A revision of this notation was performed only in GE3, and then incomplete, since it was only the  restoring b that was added. In the main text we add both necessary flats (restoring b and B); we also add 3 cautionary accidentals –  of g1 and the flats of b1-b2

In FE, there is no  raising a to a, which is a patent mistake, corrected in GE and EE.

b. 268

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

The second half of the bar is written in the sources even more carelessly than in b. 264. In FE (→GE1), there is no  before a3 on the 4th quaver of the bar; the  restoring a3 in the last chord is also missing. These accidentals were added in EE and GE2 (→GE3). Moreover, FE (→GE1,EE) are lacking in the flats restoring b1 and b in the last two L.H. quavers. The mistake was partially corrected – only on the 5th quaver of the bar – only in GE2 (→GE3). See also the preceding note.

2 long accents in FE & GE2 (→GE3)

Long & short accents in GE1

No accents in EE

The difference in the length of the accents, visible in FE between the accent in b. 273 & the 2nd accent in b. 274 and the remaining accents in b. 274-276, does not necessarily mean that they should be diversified. It may be a result of a different origin of these two accents, which were probably added only just in the last stage of proofreading of FE (it is supported by their absence in EE). The latter was inaccurately reproduced in GE1, which was then corrected in GE2 (→GE3).
