EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: IV 1835
Plate number: 1491
Title: Bolero
Dedication: Emilie de Flahault

The first English edition is based on FE, hence it repeats its mistakes and inaccuracies. Chopin did not participate in its development. In addition, a number of revisions was introduced, the most important of which include:

  • adding fingering in the entire piece;
  • changing (unifying) all accents as short ones;
  • adding fermatas in bars 1-333;
  • adding a rest in bars 5 and 11;
  • changing the dynamic mark in bar 19;
  • ties in bars 19-20;
  • cresc. and dim. over or under the hairpin;
  • pedalling in bar 22;
  • moving accents in bars 88-89.

At the same time, several new mistakes and inaccuracies were committed in EE1:

Notation of slashed (short) grace notes as small semiquavers is a particular characteristic of EE. It is an echo of a former manner of writing single semiquavers as slashed quavers.

The annotations performed in pencil (mainly fingering) visible in the presented copy are of no source value.
