Slurs

b. 1

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur from 1st note of bar in A & GE2

Slur from quavers in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The later start of the slur could have been introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of GE1 (→FEEE) – cf. other motifs of this theme with identical rhythm, e.g. in bars 3 and 25. However, in the main text we start the slur from the 1st note of the bar, in accordance with A, since the authenticity of the version of GE1 is uncertain.

b. 4-28

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slurs in A

Slurs in bars 12 & 28 in GE1 (→FE)

3 slurs in EE

3 slurs in GE2

..

In bars 4, 12 and 28 there are no slurs in the part of the L.H. in A. These are the same bars in which pedalling signs are missing. While writing the fourth, last bar of the accompaniment based on alternating use of two schemes, Chopin could have already been thinking about the next bar, structured differently. In GE1 (→FE) slurs were added in bars 12 and 28, in both cases repeating a slur used two bars earlier (in particular in bar 12 the erroneous slur from bar 10 was repeated). According to us, it indicates an action of the reviser. In EE and GE2 a slur was added also in bar 4, whereas in GE2 the slur in bar 12 was corrected. We give the last version in the main text, since the absence of slurs in the discussed bars must be an inaccuracy of notation.

b. 5-6

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur in A & GE2

Slur c1-b in GE1

Slur c1-d1 in FE

2 slurs in EE

Our alternative suggestion, slur a-b

..

The vague placement of the slur in GE1 – it can be seen as a slur of c1-d1 (literal interpretation) or c1-b (interpretation of FE) or even a-b – points to a possibility of the engraver's mistake. Due to this reason, in the main text we present the unquestionable slur of A. According to us, however, Chopin's proofreading cannot be excluded; it could have been inaccurately implemented by the engraver. In this case, we consider the slur of a-b to be a version probably intended by Chopin. The version of EE is most probably arbitrary, whereas GE2 restored the text of A

b. 16-17

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur from bar 17 in A

Slur from bar 16 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In A, starting the slur from bar 17 is most probably an inaccuracy, being a result of the transition to a new page. It was corrected in GE (→FEEE); the traces of correction in print are clearly visible. At the same time, one can see that the slur in GE1 originally encompassed bars 17-19, which was changed to a slurring that was not only compliant with A, but also correcting the inaccuracy of the manuscript. In this case, the authenticity of this correction is unquestionable.

b. 29-31

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

3-note slurs in A & GE2

4- & 5-note slurs in GE1

5-note slurs in FE (→EE)

..

The range of the slurs of the R.H. in A is beyond doubt, although none of them transcends the bar line (cf. the slurs in the L.H., written more accurately). The slurs of GE1 surprise with their inaccuracy, and the ones of FE (→EE) even more. The notation of A was interpreted correctly only in GE2.
