Slurs

b. 33

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Separate slurs in A

Continuous slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The division of the slur in A is probably the original version, left due to deletions and inability to write a continuous slur in a graceful way. However, such slur is in the L.H. and in GE (→FEEE), where Chopin's possible intention was interpreted correctly.

b. 35-41

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No L.H. slur in A (→GE1FE)

Slur to end of bar 40 in EE

Slur to beginning of bar 41 in GE2

Slur to bar 41 suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest adding the slur in the L.H. – slurs in the L.H. are present both before and after this phrase, hence a missing slur could suggest a difference in performance between the right and left hand, which certainly was not Chopin's intention. When the phrase returns in bars 379-385, the slur in the L.H. is also absent, but in this case, Chopin consistently gave slurs only in the R.H. in the entire fragment in unison (bars 377-388). A similar addition was introduced already in EE as well as in GE2.

b. 40-41

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur to b in A (contextual interpretation→GE)

Slur to b1 in A (literal reading) & FE (→EE)

..

Bar 40 is the last one on the page in A, and, in spite of the fact that the slur suggests continuation in the next bar, there is no ending on a new page. In GE1, a slur was initially printed to the end of bar 40 and a new one from the beginning of bar 41 to the end of bar 44. The slurs were then corrected to the version written in A (probably at Chopin's request). FE (→EE) included the corrected version of the beginning of the slur in bar 41, but not of the ending of the slur from bar 40, which could mean that the correction was introduced in the last phase of proofreading of GE1.

b. 51-53

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we add a slur for the 1st bassoon part, equivalent to the flute and clarinet parts, embraced with a slur in the part of the R.H. In A, a corresponding slur is present in analogous bars 396-397.

b. 52-53

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors after Morch

..

The slur of A is most probably inaccurate, since there is no reason to separate the last note of the phrase, played by the wind quartet and provided with one continuous slur in Morch. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur corresponding to the phrasing written in the parts of violin I and clarinet I in Morch.
