Slurs

b. 201-211

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In A there are visible deletions of the endings of the slurs over the staccato dots in bars 201-204. Instead of them, Chopin added new, shorter endings below, reaching the note heads. The aim of these corrections remains unclear, perhaps the goal was to graphically emphasise the dots. For the second time, in bars 209-212, the composer wrote the slurs already in the "new" way, except for bar 211, in which one can see a correction described above, although without deletion of the original ending.

b. 205-206

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

2 slurs in A (literal reading→GE1FEEE)

..

The slurs at the transition between these bars in A are vague – the slur in bar 205, although it does not go beyond the bar line, clearly suggests continuation, but the slur in bar 206 (on a new page) begins from the 1st note. GE1 (→FEEE) interpreted it literally, as two slurs. See also the note on the slurs in the L.H.

b. 205-206

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur in bars 206-207 in A

Slur in bar 206 in GE1 (→FE)

2 slurs in EE

Slur in bars 205-207 in GE2

..

In A the slur in the L.H. is written only on a new page, which, according to us, indicates an inaccuracy of notation. Therefore, in the main text we start the slur already in bar 205, in parallel to the slur in the R.H. (the same solution was adopted in GE2). In GE1 (→FE) the slur starts in bar 206 (in accordance with A), embracing with it only this bar (without fin bar 207). EE added a separate slur in bar 205.

b. 206

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In later impressions of GE1a, a retouch was performed in the area encompassing the part of the R.H. in this bar. The reengraved slur erroneously leads only to the last note in the bar, although in bar 207 (on a new page) there is an ending of this slur.

b. 212-213

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slur in A & GE2

Our variant suggestion

..

It is unclear whether Chopin wanted to combine the last crotchet in bar 212 with the first one in bar 213 with a slur. In all sources, bar 212 ends a line of the text, which is conducive to inaccuracies – it could explain both the absence of the slur in A and no ending of the slur added in bar 212 in GE1 (→FEEE). In GE2 the unfinished slur was regarded as a mistake and it was omitted. However, taking into account the fact that the slur of GE1, in spite of its imprecision, could have been added by Chopin, in the main text we include it in a form compliant with the authentic slur in analogous bars 204-205 (we add brackets due to the uncertainty of the source issue).
