b. 207-208

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Long accents in A

Short accents in GE (→FEEE)

..

The change of the clearly long accents in A to short ones is certainly a result of an inaccuracy of GE (→FEEE). The sign in bar 207 was initially written over the top stave in A, and then deleted and replaced with an accent between the parts of both hands.

e in A (→GE)

g in FE (→EE)

..

The version of FE (→EE) could be considered a result of Chopin's proofreading. However, it can be a quite frequent so-called Terzverschreibung error, i.e. erroneously printing a note a third away from the correct one. In the main text we give the probably authentic, later version of FE. According to us, the earlier, yet undoubtedly authentic, version of A can be considered to be equal.

No slur in A & GE2

Slur in GE1 (→FEEE), contextual interpretation

Our variant suggestion

..

It is unclear whether Chopin wanted to combine the last crotchet in bar 212 with the first one in bar 213 with a slur. In all sources, bar 212 ends a line of the text, which is conducive to inaccuracies – it could explain both the absence of the slur in A and no ending of the slur added in bar 212 in GE1 (→FEEE). In GE2 the unfinished slur was regarded as a mistake and it was omitted. However, taking into account the fact that the slur of GE1, in spite of its imprecision, could have been added by Chopin, in the main text we include it in a form compliant with the authentic slur in analogous bars 204-205 (we add brackets due to the uncertainty of the source issue).

Staccato dot in A & GE2

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

No staccato dot is a patent mistake of GE1 (→FEEE).

Slur from 2nd beat in A & GE2

Slur from first beat in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The earlier beginning of the slur in GE1 (→FEEE) has no musical justification and is an example of the schematic approach to slurs of the engraver of GE1. The simultaneous oversight of the staccato dot at the beginning of bar 213 in this edition probably contributed to the fact that the erroneous range of this slur was not detected in later editions.
