Long accent in A

 in GE1 (→FEEE)

 in GE2

..

The typical long accent visible in A was falsely reproduced in the editions as a diminuendo hairpin, which would frequently happen in Chopin's works – cf. e.g. the Etude in A minor, Op. 10 No. 2, bar 8 and 12.

Slur in A

GE (→FE)

..

The slur of GE (→FE) is probably a result of a schematic interpretation of the notation of A, although from the musical point of view, it is absolutely possible. A shortened slur in EE is certainly an arbitrary revision.

2 dots in A

No marks in GE (→FEEE)

..

Omission of the staccato dots by the engraver of GE1 can be understood, since they are poorly visible in A, particularly the second one that blends in with the ending of the stem of the chord in the R.H.

b. 71

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In GE1 and in the remaining editions, the slur starts – contrary to A – only from the 1st semiquaver. The reason for this inaccuracy were most probably difficulties of a graphic character: moving the beginning of the slur facilitates a legible placement of all elements of notation accumulated in this space (inscriptions, an octave sign, a phrase mark, a tie, notes over the stave). Both notations are practically equal, hence we do not consider the difference to be an actual variant.

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

Slur to c1 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The undoubtedly erroneous slur of GE1 (→FEEE) is a result of coinciding two factors:

  • an unclear ending moment of the slur of A – when interpreted literally, it ends on the g1 quaver or the bsemiquaver;
  • graphically complicated notation of A, impossible to be literally reproduced in print (a slur between the parts of both hands, written on one stave).

In the main text, we give an interpretation of the notation of A, which we find accurate, adopted in GE2. Cf. bar 75.
