Slurs

b. 214-215

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No slurs in A

3 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

Slur in GE2

..

It is difficult to imagine that Chopin, when proofreading GE1, could have added slurs in the L.H. in this form: the added slur, analogous with the slur in the R.H. (cf. the slur in GE2), was either reproduced in a simplified manner (GE1 avoided long slurs, requiring a precise adjustment) or it is simply an editorial revision. Since in such a context the slur over the R.H. is valid also for the L.H., in the main text we leave the notation of A.

b. 215-216

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs in A (→GE1)

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE2

..

Shortening the slur at the end of bar 215 is a result of an inaccurate interpretation of GE1 by the engraver of FE (→EE). Interestingly, the reviser of GE2 not only introduced a similar change, but he also moved the beginning of the next slur, probably considering this type of a hidden coincidence of slurs to be illogical, hence – erroneous.

b. 216-217

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

End of slur in A, contextual interpretation

End of slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slur of A is written inaccurately – its ending part includes a one and a half centimetre gap, resulting from ink stoppage, whereas in bar 217 (on a new page) there is no ending of the slur. In this situation, an erroneous interpretation of the slur in the editions was practically decided.

In some of the impressions of GE1a, the slur in bar 216 was extended, so that it suggests a continuation. It seems to be a random result, since the ending of the slur in bar 217 was not added.

b. 217

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur from 1st quaver in A & GE2

Slur from 2nd quaver in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The later started slur in the majority of the editions is a result of inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE).

b. 217

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Beginning of slur in A, contextual interpretation

Beginning of slur in GE (→FEEE

..

The beginning of the slur of A is undoubtedly inaccurate; however, it is unclear from which note it was supposed to start, according to Chopin – from the 2nd fsemiquaver, from the sustained esemiquaver or maybe even from the ecrotchet, as it was interpreted in GE (→FEEE). We adopt the second of the possibilities as the text of A due to a slightly similar situation in the previous bar. Being uncertain how A is to be interpreted, in the main text we give the unambiguous notation of the editions (equivalent to the one we adopted to A).
