Slurs

b. 149-150

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

4 slurs in A & GE2

1 slur in GE1FE)

No slurs in EE

..

Four little slurs written in A from the grace notes to the opposite notes of the octaves emphasise the expressive character of the octave mini-motifs. The detail was fully reproduced only in GE2 – in the previous editions the majority of the little slurs was overlooked (in EE all of them).

b. 150-151

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

End of slur in A (literal reading→GE1FEEE)

End of slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

..

It is unclear whether the slur of A ends together with the last semiquaver in bar 150 or whether it is supposed to reach further, to the next bar. In GE1 (→FEEE) the first possibility was adopted, which was changed in GE2. We are in favour of the second interpretation, since the octave at the beginning of bar 151 is undoubtedly the end of the prior phrase. Starting the new thought from semiquavers is confirmed by  added in FED.

b. 152

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Long accent in A

Short accent in GE (→FEEE)

..

The "model" long accent in A was reproduced in the editions as a short one. Similarly in bar 154 as well as in bars 302 and 304.

b. 156-158

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

1 slur in A

2 slurs in GE1

1 slur in FE (→EE)

2 slurs in GE2

..

In the main text, we give the slurs in the L.H. in bars 156 and 158 after A. The half-bar slurs of GE1 (spanning 4 and 3 quavers) are a characteristic arbitrary decision of this edition. In the proofreading of FE (→EE), Chopin combined the slurs within the bars, leaving – as probably less striking – an inaccurately marked starting point of the slurs. GE2 corrected the starting point after A, but not the divisions.

b. 159

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs from 2nd quaver in A & GE2

Slurs from 1st quaver in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In GE1 (→FEEE), the fact of embracing both four-quaver figures of the accompaniment with half-bar slurs is a typical example of the schematic approach of the engraver of GE1. GE2 returned the notation of A.
