b. 67

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

e2-d2 w As (1. version) & A (→FEGE,EE)

e2-d2-c2 in As (2nd version→AI)

..

The version of AI is naturally earlier than the published version; however, the notation of As, in which both versions most probably overlap, suggests that it is the version of A that was created first. It results from the space between the notes – e2 and d2 fill the bar to the same extent as f2 and e2 in the previous bar. Then, willing to introduce a progression of three crotchets, Chopin simply added a c2. The corrections visible in the next two bars reveal also other changes in the second half of this phrase; therefore, it is likely that the continuation of the two-note version of this bar in As was different than in the final version (cf. the reconstruction of the earliest version of the melody in the note to bar 69). A correction in this place is visible also in A – the interpretation of the crossed-out text is actually impossible, but the range of the crossing-out suggests that two crotchets were removed, hence most probably the version of AI.

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

 in A

No signs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In bars 68, 72 and 84 FE (→GE,EE) omitted the  hairpin under the part of the L.H. It is probably a result of distraction of the engraver of FE.

No ties nor slur in As & AI

Ties & slur in A

Mistaken ties in FE

No b & mistaken slur in GE1op

Mistaken slurs in EEW1 (→EEW2)

No b in GE2op (→GE3op)

In bar 68 and at the beginning of bar 69 all the autographs concord as to which L.H. notes should be struck. However, only in A Chopin notated the tied notes and a slur over the bass progression. FE notated erroneously a tie and a slur starting in bar 68 which ends the line in this edition. These errors resulted in no edition presenting the correct notation. Moreover, GE1op (→GE2opGE3op) omitted the note b  at the beginning of bar 69.

b. 68-69

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

..

Both the tie of b and the phrase mark over the three-note progression of bass in A were reproduced in FE with mistakes, significantly impeding guessing their correct meaning. As a result, the phrase mark was reproduced correctly only in GE2op (→GE3op). See the note on ties.

b. 68-69

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Slur to f1 in AI & FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEC)

Slur to g1 in A, EEW1 (→EEW2), GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

..

The slur of AI reflects the original assumptions underlying the phrasing – it encompasses exactly 4 bars. In A, Chopin encompassed the entire first phrase with a slur, which, however, was not precisely reproduced in FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEC), perhaps due to the line of the text ending in bar 68. In subsequent editions, the slur was extended according to the musical sense.
