EE3 - Revised impression of EE2

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: ca 1858
Title: Douze Etudes || No. 21
Dedication: Mme. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE3 reintroduced the overlooked in EE2 dedication, by placing it over the note text of the 1st page of the Etude in A major, No. 1. Among the changes in the note text, revisions introduced on the basis of comparison with the text of GE1 prevail:

  • a from the chord in bar 8 was removed;
  • g and a cautionary  before e to the chord in bar 12 was added (yet the necessary  raising c1 to c1 in this bar was not added);
  • e1 to the sixth on the 2nd quaver in bar 34 was added;
  • the version of the L.H. in the 1st half of bar 37 – in a limited form, without the tie sustaining d – was added;
  • unnecessary flats in bar 43 were added.

The last of the mentioned corrections proves the reviser's routine approach, who introduced the different versions noticed in GE1, without thinking about their purpose. In spite of the above additions and corrections, certain mistakes remained unnoticed, e.g., lack of flats in bars 9, 12-13 and – probably – 34.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a later (ca. 1862) impression, endorsed by Wessel's successor, the Ashdown & Parry company. The changes in relation to the original impression of Wessel (whose copy the editors of mUltimate Chopin did not find) most probably concerned only the details of the cover – above all, the company's name was updated (cf. the cover of the first book of the Etudes).
