GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: X 1837
Title: Douze Etudes || 9me Etude
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

GE1 is based on GC and it generally carefully reproduces the text of the base text. The differences can be mainly explained with an inaccuracy or manner of the engraver, e.g.:

  • oversight of one of the accents in bar 8;
  • oversight of the  raising c1 to c1 in bar 10;
  • shifted  in bar 15,
  • not taking into account the correction of  to  in bar 32;
  • erroneous reproduction of the tie in bars 37-38.

One of this kind of differences – leaving out the a note in the 2nd chord in the L.H. in bar 8 – can be considered a correction introduced by Chopin, as the created version reveals features of a Chopin improvement. According to us, however, it is highly unlikely.

In turn, the addition of a cautionary  in bar 12 is certainly an editorial revision.

GE1 did not correct any of the inaccuracies of GC with respect to the accidentals.

GE1 was provided with slightly differing covers, in particular the copies from 1841 and later include a changed price (15 Ngr instead of 12 Gr). From 1841, separate Etudes were published also separately, provided with a collective cover including 12 etudes each by Chopin, Henselt and Thalberg.
