In A, CDP, FE, and EE1, there is no  raising d2 to d2. This patent oversight was corrected in GE and EE2 (→EE3). AI also includes the correct notation.

Long accent in AI

  in A

  in FE & GE2 (→GE3)

  in GE1 (→GE1a)

  in EE

..

The long accent in AI is the original version – in A and the editions, there is a pair of dynamic hairpins. According to us, the differences in range do not have any significant meaning, therefore, in the main text we give the signs of FE, which seems to have the most accurate markings in these few bars (from bar 17).

b. 20

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

The fourth semiquaver in the R.H. in A is written too low, so it resembles rather a d1 than an e1. This is how it was interpreted in GE1 (→GE1a). The erroneous d1 is also present in CDP and EE, while the visible traces in FE prove that initially also this edition included d1. It constitutes a strong argument for – indirect or direct – provenience of all these sources from A. Apart from AI and FE, the correct text is also to be found in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 22

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

Many sources lack in one or both naturals before the bottom notes in the R.H. in the 1st and 2nd group of semiquavers. CDP lacks in both signs, while A (→GE1), FE and EE only the second. The correct notation is included in AI and GE2 (→GE3).

AI and EE1 lack in the  raising d2 to d2 at the beginning of the 2nd group of semiquavers.

b. 23

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

In some of the sources the notation of accidentals in this bar is less accurate, which, however, does not influence the clarity of the text. In A and FE, all the necessary accidentals before the lowest notes of particular groups in the R.H. and top notes in the L.H. are missing. The same probably applies also to CDP, although it is hard to conclusively state due to a serious mistake committed by the copyist in this place. The notation of AI is more precise – Chopin wrote there both naturals raising d1 to d1. In turn, the situation in EE is just the opposite – it is exactly these naturals that are missing. GE added all the necessary signs.
