Issues : Errors of CDP

b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

No indications in AI & CDP

in A (→GE), FE & EE

..

Chopin added the tempo indication, including the metronome tempo, only at the stage of preparing the Etude for publication – in #AW they are absent. In A one can see that the metronome tempo was added (in pencil) to the already finished manuscript.

In CDP, the entire first part of the manuscript (to bar 19) is devoid of any performance markings, which almost certainly does not reflect the state of the copied manuscript (probably autograph). Due to this fact, we do not include this source in the notes discussing the performance indications.

b. 7

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

f1 in AI, A (→GE), FE & EE

e1 in CDP

The version of #CFP, although possible from the harmonic point of view, is most probably simply a mistake.

b. 9

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

A in CDP

A1 in AI, A (→GE), FE & EE

..

The version of CDP is probably erroneous (the copyist could have looked at bar 10 in A), as the A1 note is already present in AI and it is highly unlikely that Chopin would have then returned to the probably original version with A – cf. bar 1. However, if CDP is a copy of another, lost autograph, allegedly intended for gift, it cannot be excluded that the version was written there by Chopin.

b. 22

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

Many sources lack in one or both naturals before the bottom notes in the R.H. in the 1st and 2nd group of semiquavers. CDP lacks in both signs, while A (→GE1), FE and EE only the second. The correct notation is included in AI and GE2 (→GE3).

AI and EE1 lack in the  raising d2 to d2 at the beginning of the 2nd group of semiquavers.

b. 29-38

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

In CDP there are no pedalling marks from bar 29 until the end of the piece. We do not consider it to be a real "variant" of indications and we do not include this source in the pedalling notes.
