b. 19-20

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

Two slurs in AI, FE & EE

Slur in A, interpretation

Slur in CDP

Slur in GE

..

The notation of the slur in bar 20 in A must be considered as inaccurate – the slur is most probably broken (perhaps there was no more ink in the quill). This shortening was not included already in GE. In the remaining sources, the entire bar is provided with a separate slur.

From bar 20, CDP is written by another hand, considering performance indications (at least some of them). Taking this into account, we already include the versions of this source in the notes concerning performance indications. In this case, in the copied manuscript there were most probably two whole-bar slurs.

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

4 big notes in AI & EE1

8 big notes in A, FE & GE1a (→GE2GE3)

Small notes in CDP & EE2 (→EE3)

5 big notes in GE1

..

In the main text we give the version of A, confirmed by FE and most probably by Chopin proofreading of GE1a (→GE2GE3). The notation of GE1 is erroneous, while AI and EE1 include the original concept of separating the tenor voice only in the part creating a descending melodic line. The versions of CDP and EE2 (→EE3) are certainly non-authentic.

b. 19

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

No markings in AI

 in A (→GE), FE & EE

..

Same as in analogous bar 17, the earlier pedalling of AI was completed by Chopin in 3A, which was reproduced in all editions. The pedalling of AI seems to be generally less considered than in A (cf., e.g., bar 1 and 9).

b. 19-22

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

..

In CDP there are no pedalling indications in bars 19-21, nor on the first three beats in bar 22. We do not consider it as an independent version – see the characteristics of this manuscript.

b. 20

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

No sign in CDP

 in AI

 in A (→GE)

 in FE

 in EE

..

In the main text we give the whole-bar  hairpins, analogously to the ones adopted in bar 18, on the basis of A (→GE). In the remaining sources the sign is slightly shorter.
