Slurs
b. 10
|
composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor
..
In FE (→EE,GE1) the slur embraces the entire R.H. part in this bar. In the editors' opinion a misunderstanding of A is more probable than a correction. Therefore, in the main text we adopt the A version with a slur embracing only the run (in all analogous bars – 58, 114 and 162 – the slur was rendered this way in all editions). The slur in the subsequent GE,s was assimilated to its remaining occurences. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , GE revisions |

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor
..
The absence of the R.H. slurs in FE (except for the first, under the semiquavers) is most probably a side effect of changes to the layout of the R.H. part. These changes, introduced in print, comprised all instances of this bar (bars 20, 68 and 124), but a slur over the upper voice, which probably should have appeared each time, is only printed in bar 124, owing to the engraver's negligence or Chopin's inadvertence. In the editors opinion the slur was meant to replace the slur in the lower voice, written in A. In GE and EE the slur over the upper voice was also reproduced in bars 20 and 68 (in GE Chopin's inspiration cannot be excluded). The slurs in the R.H. and L.H. in bars 29 and 31 were added in the proofreading of FE1 certainly by Chopin. Similarly in bars 133 and 135. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

The slur in the L.H. combining e with f in the next bar was added by Chopin most probably in the proofreading of FE1. The need of adding this slur resulted from a change in the graphical layout – in A the slur over the part of the R.H., written on the bottom stave, concerns the entire chords, hence also the top voice of the L.H. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE |
