Slurs
b. 34

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor
..
No slur in the L.H. in A – see bar 33. The ending of the slur on a new page was overlooked in GE3 (→GE4). category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE |

b. 35-36
|
composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor
..
The slur under the F notes at the transition between the bars, added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→GE1,EE), seems to indicate sustention of this note. Comparison with the notation of this motif two bars earlier indicates, however, that Chopin most probably thought about a phrasing slur, which the engraver arbitrarily moved to the side of note heads (it was a frequent, routine procedure ordering the notation; in the case of dyads or chords, it could, however, change the sense of the sign, same as in this case). In the subsequent GE the slur was moved higher, most probably as a result of comparison with analogous situation in bars 33-34. Similarly in bars 139-140. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Placement of markings , GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 39

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

The omitted slur is probably an oversight by the engraver of FE (→GE1,EE1). The remaining editions added the slur undoubtedly after a comparison with the analogous bar 143. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE |

b. 40
|
composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

The slur of A, although quite clearly exceeding the notes it embraces, concerns, according to us, only the repeated f-f1 octaves. The whole-bar slur of FE (→GE,EE) is, therefore, almost certainly erroneous. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Embracing slurs |

b. 41-44
|
composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor
..
In bars 41-44, similarly as in bar 40, the slurs in A are written in a very imprecise manner. One can see in these bars corrections and deletions, which also intensifies the difficulties at the time of interpreting the composer's intention. In the main text we give a probable interpretation of A taking account of Chopin's correction in FE in bars.43-44 and analogous bars. As variants, we give interpretations of engravers or revisers of FE (→EE), GE1 and GE2 (→GE3→GE4). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Embracing slurs , GE revisions |
