Pedalling in A, GE2 (→GE3GE4) & EE2

No markings in FE (→GE1,EE1)

..

The absence of pedalling marks in FE (→EE,GE1) is most probably an oversight of the engraver. The signs were added in GE2 (→GE3GE4), probably on the basis of comparison with analogous places.

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

..

In GE1, probably as a result of an error, the 2nd beat of bar 7 and the entire bar 8 are written without staccato dots. In the subsequent GE, most likely in order to unify all occurrences of this fragment, the dots on the 3rd beat of bar 7 were also removed. Cf. bars 111-112.

d2 & d3 in A (→FEEE)

d2 & d3 in GE

..

Before the 8th note of the passage A (→FEEE) includes a  (d2). Chopin did not make any changes in any of the three preserved pupil's copies, hence we give this most certain version, as far as the sources are concerned, as the main one. GE includes a  before the 8th and 15th note of the passage (d2 and d3). A possibility of the change having been introduced by Chopin is indicated by the testimony of Mikuli (supported by RC), who in his edition of Polonaises (Kistner, Leipzig) states that at the time of Ms. Rubio learning this piece, Chopin added  next to d2 and d3. We bring up this version as a variant.

Slur in A & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

Longer slur in FE (→GE1,EE)

..

In FE (→EE,GE1) the slur embraces the entire R.H. part in this bar. In the editors' opinion a misunderstanding of A is more probable than a correction. Therefore, in the main text we adopt the A version with a slur embracing only the run (in all analogous bars – 58, 114 and 162 – the slur was rendered this way in all editions). The slur in the subsequent GE,s was assimilated to its remaining occurences.
