Verbal indications

b. 111

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

 in A (→EE,GCGE)

No marking in FE

..

The  marking extends in A from the last quaver in bar 111 to the first chord in bar 112, so that FE put it only in bar 112. In the editors opinion, it is GC (→GE) and EE who conveyed Chopin's intention correctly – if he had wanted the marking to apply only from bar 112, there would have been no reason to start writing so much earlier in the previous bar. See also bar 136.

b. 112

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

in bar 111 in A (→EE,GCGE)

in bar 112 in FE

..

In the editors' opinion  in this bar results from a misinterpretation of the notation in A.

b. 120

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

in A

in GC (→GE) & EE

No indication in FE

..

In GC (→GE) and EE there are no dashes determining the range of the ritenuto indication, while in FE the entire indication. These are most likely oversights.

b. 155

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

cresc. - - - in A (→GCGE)

cresc. - - - in FE

cresc. in EE

cresc. - - - suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we place the cresc. - - - between the staves, for it pertains not only to the progression of the L.H. Chopin wrote it below the lower staff probably out of concern for the legibility of A – in bar 156 the semiquaver beams and stems are written between staves and make placing the indication there virtually impossible. FE and EE introduced a similar shift.
