Issues : Errors in GE

b. 63

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

a1 in A (→FE,EE) & GE3

g1 in GC (→GE1GE2)

..

The version in GC (→GE1GE2) is certainly erroneous, for the copy shows no sign of Chopin's correction there. The mistake is probably of a "musical-pianistic" type, and not a lapsus calami – the chord with g1 corresponds exactly to the range of the two last groups of four semiquavers in bar 62. The change in GE3 was introduced presumably after the following bar or FE.

b. 89-92

Slur in A (→EE)

Slur in GC, literal interpretation

Slur in FE

No slur in GE

..

In GC bars 89-90 end the line of text. This caused the copyist to have erroneously omitted the opening part of the slur – he wrote only the ending fragment in bars 91-92. In GE this fragmentary slur was overlooked or omitted. For the joining of the slur in FE to the preceding one see the note in bar 88.
In A, the way the slur ends makes it clearly a "tenuto-slur". This was properly rendered only in EE. See also the note in bar 92.

Octaves in A (→FE1,EE)

Chords with e3 in GC & FE2 (→FE3)

Chords with f3 in GE

..

The octaves in A (→FE1,EE) are the original version – Chopin completed it by adding the e3 notes both in GC and in a proofreading of FE2 (→FE3). We give this version, corrected twice in a different period of time, in which the transition from the four-bar chord in the middle of the bar to the octave in bar 11 is smoother, thanks to the triads, as the main one. The f3 note on the last quaver in GE is most probably a result of a misinterpretation of the note in GC, which was written slightly too high.

b. 115-119

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur in bars 115-119 in A (→GC,EE)

Slur in bar 115 in FE

No slur in GE

..

In FE the slur in the middle voice breaks at the end of line (in bar 115). GE overlooked the entire slur, despite an unambiguous and clear notation of GC.

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

g tied in A (→GC) & FE3

g repeated in FE1 (→FE2), EE & GE

..

In EE, GE and FE1 (→FE2) there is no tie sustaining the note to the next bar. FE3 corrected this inaccuracy.
